Cloud Application Infrastructure Technologies Need 7 years to Mature

    cloud computing represents the major inflection point in IT. However, as with any emerging trend, the cloud will evolve as it emerges from the "bleeding edge" of the industry fringe toward the center of most mainstream IT efforts.


Key Findings
   • Through 2011, dominant development platforms and tools that target cloud deployments (see Note 1) will remain highly proprietary. From now until then, the focus will be on innovation over market viability.
   • From 2011 to 2015, market competition and maturing developer practices will drive consolidation around a small group of industry-dominant cloud technology providers.
   • By 2013, intracloud application programming interfaces (APIs) will emerge to mitigate some but not all risk regarding proprietary lock-in by providing strong support to cloud-to-cloud interoperability.
   • By 2014, concern over proprietary lock-in will lead to critical-mass support for one or more open-cloud application infrastructure software stacks. The open-source software model is the most likely candidate for these efforts.


Recommendations
  • Through 2011, consider investments in cloud-centric application technologies to be tactical. Focus on return-on-investment time frames of no more than 18 months for cloud-centric application development (AD) projects.
  • After 2011, focus efforts on emerging dominant vendors, open-source projects and industry standards that will emerge during a time of considerable market consolidation. Technology investments can shift from a tactical short-term focus to long-term strategic plans at this time. Service-enabled application platforms (SEAPs) are the foundation on which software-as-a-service (SaaS) solutions are built. We examine major trends that will affect the best practices, tools, technologies and skills used by application developers as SEAP technologies mature during the next several years. We find three distinct and slightly overlapping phases of evolution during this time frame.
